Ground water is "ever changing", therefore there's no telling when a problem can unexpectedly appear.

Coliforms, which are non-pathogenic, are the most common bacterial contaminant that we find in our private water supplies. But more serious strains such as e-coli have the potential to become present once total coliforms have been detected. Shocking the well with chlorine is another approach to reduce bacterial presence in well water. The problem with this approach is that once the chlorine residual is gone; there's nothing preventing a recurrence of bacteria.

For optimum efficiency of any UV sterilization system, you'll want to ensure the water is soft, has iron and manganese levels within acceptable limits, and has a 5 micron pre filter to remove particulate from the water that can otherwise cast shadows for the "bugs" to hide behind.
